Jody announced that the new Membership Handbooks are going to be passed out today to everyone — thanks to John Porter for putting in many, many hours to put this together!
John P. has theater tickets for sale/pick up today. All club members are expected to buy and/or sell two tickets to this December 3 event!! Should be a fun event, and will be one of our official meetings in December.
Today’s Program:
Jody served as today’s finemaster and we learned the following:
Jody as finemaster.
– There are 3 types of polio. One type is paralytic, another is non-paralytic, and the third is bolvard (sp?) that attacks the chest muscles.
– 95% of polio cases show no symptoms.
– The polio virus can spread through the air by sick people coughing or sneezing.
– 50% of polio victims are under the age of 5.
– 2-5% of polio victims will die of paralysis of their ability to breathe.
– The polio vaccine was found in 1952.
Jody introduced Bob Rogers of the Sebastopol Rotary Club. He is a survivor of polio, and has been very active in the Rotary Polio Plus fundraising.

Bob Rogers is our District Governor Nominee for 2017-18. He is a retired airline pilot, and his second career is Rotary.
Bob shared the story of a young man in Canada who raised $310K by cycling on a hand-cranked bike through Canada to raise awareness for polio. Rameesh contracted polio at 6 months of age, and was eventually adopted by a Canadian couple.
Polio been around from 1580-1350 BC stone tablet showing an Egyptian man on a crutch with a withered leg. there were 57,628 cases of polio in 1952.
Rotary got involved in the polio fight due to RI President Clem Renouf in 1978-79, so that all Rotary clubs of the world could work on a single project together. He partnered with Dr. John Sever to figure out if we could do what had been done with small pox — eradication worldwide. Carlos Canseco, RI President 1984-85 added a goal of eradication by 2005. WHO, CDC and Unicef came on board to help with the $250M raised by Rotary, and the 1M+ Rotarians who were willing to help at the local level.
Our county only has 84.4% of current kindergartners vaccinated against polio. If the polio virus makes its way here, they are al at risk.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has committed a 2-to-1 match for every dollar raised by Rotary for Polio Plus in the next 5 years. We’re so close, and we need to keep pushing until it’s completely eradicated.
There have been 51 cases worldwide year-to-date, compared to 256 at this time last year — an 80% improvement! There are only two endemic countries now: Afghanistan and Pakistan. We are 99.9% polio free worldwide. It’s $0.60 per dose… $25 will vaccinate 125 children.
